Activity
Rainbow Toast
Who says toast has to be boring? This colorful activity will give your kid an opportunity to review primary and secondary colors and it's a great way to add a little flair to a breakfast staple. Help your child master ROYGBIV and the art of color creation with this activity that's as fun as it is yummy.
What You Need:
- Loaf of bread
- Milk
- Butter
- Food coloring (primary colors)
- Paintbrush
- Small bowls
- Toaster oven
What You Do:
- Set out the bowls and pour a small amount of milk in each of them except for one, which will serve as the water bowl for him to use in between colors. Make sure you have enough bowls so there's one for each color you plan on using.
- Help your child create the primary colors by squeezing several drops of each container of food coloring in the different bowls.
- Now it's time to create the secondary colors. Ask your child if he knows which colors of food coloring you'll need to combine to create orange, green, and violet (you can leave indigo out, if you want).
- Create the secondary colors by squeezing the appropriate color pairings in different bowls. If he had trouble remembering how these colors are made, actively involve him in the color creation process.
- Give your child a slice of bread, or several if he's making toast for a few people.
- Encourage him to dip the paintbrush in the colored milk and paint the bread.
- Tell him that he can create whatever design he wants on the bread. He can even draw a picture with the colors if he'd like. Be careful that the bread doesn't get too moist though; it won't toast very well if it's dripping wet.
- Place the bread in toaster oven.
- Butter up and enjoy the rainbow of taste!
