Play the Name Mix-Up Game
Here’s a fun way to boost your child’s vocabulary and language skills, with an activity that's all about him. Challenge him to see how many words he can make out of his own name, using some homemade flashcards. Or, make it a multi-player game by combining extra "letter cards" for each additional child. This is a brain-sparking, recreational activity for the budding wordsmith in your home—and it's super easy to set up!
What You Need:
- Marker
- White card stock paper
- Scissors
What You Do:
- Before begining, cut a stack of paper into "flashcard" size—rectangles about 3" x 2" work well.
- Ask your child to write each letter of his first and last name on a separate flashcard, using the big marker. If any other kids are playing, ask them to write out the letters of their names in the same manner.
- Lay the cards out in an open space, where they can easily be seen.
- Encourage him to find words within the letters of his name. For instance, out of “MATTHEW” you can find “HAT”, “MAT,” and “MATH”, to name a few. Help him make a list of the words he's found in his name. If multiple players are participating, each player can make a separate list of words they've found in the letters. The player with the most words, wins!
