Photo Coasters
Photo coasters are a lot of fun, and this tutorial helps you make a unique set of low-cost photo coasters. Instead of pricey tile coasters, we opted to use inexpensive cork coasters for an easy DIY version. Add to the fun by letting your child draw on the photos with permanent marker, thus adorning himself in a series of disguises. Craft some photo coasters with your child to make personalized gifts for family and friends or a special household item.
What You Need:
- Photos of your child (We used black and white images.)
- Cork coasters
- Black waterproof marker
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Sealing or finishing agent (like Mod Podge)
- Paintbrush
- Clear coat paint
What You Do:
- Trace the coasters onto the photos.
- Before you cut them out, let your child get creative with the waterproof marker. Now is the time for him to don a series of disguises. He might opt for a mustache and/or beard, fake hair, mouse ears, a halo, pirate garb, a cowboy hat or dark glasses. Anything goes so long as the artist is decorating his own photo.
- Cut the photos out.
- Brush the sealant onto the coaster. Place your photo on top then smooth out any bubbles. You can use a credit card or clean plastic scraper to gently work any air bubbles out from the center of the photo to the edges. Let dry.
- Paint over each photo with another coat of sealant. Let it dry so that the photo doesn’t start to curl from excess moisture.
- Repeat step 4 two more times for a total of three top coats.
- Once the last coat of sealant has dried, spray the coaster with a protective layer of acrylic clear coat.
- Expand on the project by using square coasters and a series of photos that fit together like puzzle pieces. Or use photos that, when they're arranged in the right order, tell a story.
