Paper Bag Jack-o'-Lantern
Create a paper jack-o'-lantern from upcycled paper bags and newspapers with this fun Halloween craft project! Fourth graders will enjoy assembling and decorating these puffy paper pumpkins from a few simple recyclable materials. Display the finished results around the home, or line your doorstep or walkway with them to greet trick-or-treaters on Halloween.
What You Need:
- Brown paper bag
- An old newspaper
- Tape
- Orange, black, and green paint
- Large and small paintbrushes
- Green Ribbon
- Old newspapers
What You Do:
- Invite your child to turn a paper shopping bag inside out so that any graphics are facing inwards.
- Ask your child to crumple pages of the newspaper. Use these to stuff the paper bag until it is just about full, puffing it out into a round pumpkin shape.
- Have your child secure the top of the paper bag by using a length of clear tape to gather and hold the bag together.
- It's time to decorate the jack-o'-lantern! invite your child to coat the outside of the paper bag with orange paint. Kids can apply as much coverage as they like.
- Once the orange paint is dry, your child can use a smaller paintbrush to add a face to the Jack-'o-Lantern. Make it as spooky or as silly as you like!
- Complete the pumpkin by tying a length of green string at the top of the paper bag. Add a few strokes of green paint to create a pumpkin stem effect.
Be sure to display your completed jack-'o-lantern in a window or on your front steps on Halloween!
