Activity
Paper Sailboat
Bring a swell of high sea adventure to your own living room with this quick and easy paper sailboat craft! All you need is a couple of paper plates and some simple art supplies to help your child create a truly rocking toy.
What You Need:
- 2 paper plates
- Tempera paint
- Paint brushes
- Scissors
- Pencil
- Tape
- Ruler
What You Do:
- Help your child use a pencil to draw two parallel lines, about three inches apart, in the middle of one paper plate.
- Let her fold and crease the paper plate inward along these parallel lines.
- Show her how to unfold the folds so that the paper plate stands on the two edges.
- Have your child paint the paper plate ocean colors. Encourage her too add little waves and bubbles. Set aside to dry.
- Next, let her use a pencil to draw a sailboat on the second paper plate.
- Have her paint the sailboat bright colors. For a more dramatic look, have her also outline her boat with black paint.
- Help her draw a small protruding tab that extends beneath the painted sailboat. The dimensions of the tab should be roughly five inches high and two inches wide.
- Have your child cut out the painted sailboat, including the tab.
- Help her use scissors to cut a slash in the flat top of the "ocean paper plate" that is approximately two inches long.
- Let her slide the sailboat's tab into the cut.
- Have your child give her little paper creation a nudge. The sailboat should start to rock -- just like on the real ocean!
