Paper Horse

What You Need:

• 2 paper plates
• Tempera paint
• Scissors
• Pencil
• Paintbrushes
• Ruler
• Yarn
• Googly eye
• Glue
• Tape

What You Do:

1. Have your child use a pencil to lightly draw two parallel lines in the middle of one paper plate. The lines should be roughly three inches apart.
2. Help her fold the plate inward along these two lines.
3. Let her set the plate upright, balanced on the two curved, folded flaps. It should already be rocking!
4. Remind your child that the plate will be her horse's body. Have her paint the plate the color she would want her horse to be.
5. Next, it's time to make the horse's head. Help her use a pencil to draw a horse's head, neck and mane on the second paper plate.
6. Have her paint the horse's head. Don't worry if she paints outside the lines.
7. Let her use scissors to cut out the horse's head. Make sure she leaves a small, rectangular tab at the bottom of the horses's head—this will be how she attaches the head to the body.
8. Help your child cut a small slit in the top of the "body" paper plate.
9. Have her slip the tab on the horse's head into the cut in the body. Make sure she uses lots of tape to secure the head to the body.
10. Let her cut long pieces of yarn for the horse's hair.
11. Help her use scissors to make another small cut where the horse's tail should start.
12. Have her push through her strips of yarn into this cut.
13. Let her use tape to secure the yarn on the underside of the paper plate.
14. Have her use glue to attach the googly eye to the horse's head.
15. Let her set her completed paper horse on its edge and rock away!
