Paper Bag Hat
Transform a brown paper grocery bag into a hat in this arts and crafts activity! In this simple DIY project, children will upcycle a brown paper grocery bag into a sun hat using string, scissors, and their hands! The end result makes a fun accessory children can wear to protect their faces and eyes on bright summer days. This appealing activity invites children to think creatively about ways they can reuse and upcycle materials, while developing fine motor and design skills.
What You Need:
- A brown paper bag
- String
- Scissors
What You Do:
- Start by inviting your child to find a brown paper grocery bag to repurpose for this fun art activity.
- Cut the handles off the bag and turn it inside out so that any writing is now on the inside of the bag.
- Invite your child to begin forming the paper bag into a hat shape by folding and crumpling the paper bag. You can offer a helping hand by holding the bag on your child’s head and then using a length of string to create the perfect fit.
- Invite your child to continue crumpling and folding the edges of the bag to create the perfect summer sun hat!
Do You Know? The first paper bag was patented in 1852 by a man named Francis Wolle. The machine he created was the first of its kind, and gained popularity all over the world!
