Activity
My Gifts
Focusing on the positive in ourselves and seeing our gifts helps to build self-esteem and self-worth. In this social emotional learning activity, children will discuss their strengths, gifts, and the things they love about themselves. Then children, along with their parent or caretaker, will write letters to their future selves and draw encouraging pictures. These letters will be given to back to them at a future time when they are in need of some encouragement and kind reminders. This heartfelt activity is designed with kindergarten and first grade learners in mind, but can benefit children and adults of any age.
What you need:
- Kind Reminders: Letter to My Future Self worksheet
What you do:
- Ask your child, "What are some things that you do well? What do you like about yourself?"
- Give your child 3–4 heartfelt compliments.
- Explain that today they will be writing kind words and drawing a picture for themselves to remind them of their goodness. Explain that reflecting on our goodness is an important practice and it helps us develop positivity within ourselves that we can turn to even when we are feeling down.
- Explain that this letter will be given back to them at a future date when they may be having a challenging day or if they are feeling down to remind them of their wonderful qualities.
- Review the Kind Reminders: Letter to My Future Self worksheet with them.
- Write a letter to your future self while your child completes theirs.
- Share your letters with each other and promise to keep the letters in a safe spot to give to each other when you are having a challenging day.
