Activity
Musical Magical Hoops!
Build memory and motor skills with this musical movement game! In this playful activity that incorporates elements of Musical Chairs and Statues, children will assign a specific movement to each of several colored hoops that they will place throughout an indoor or an outdoor space. Play some music, and let children dance around the room until the music stops! Then it's time for each person to find a hoop and move! This wildly entertaining, scalable activity can be played alone, or with a group, with a few hoops, or many! As children play, they will build color-recognition, motor reflex, listening, and memory skills. It's also a great way to burn off energy any time of the day!
What You Need:
- Several plastic hula hoops in three colors, scattered around the floor
- Music player and speakers
What You Do:
- Assign a specific movement to each colored hoop. For example, if you have hoops in red, blue, and yellow, the red could mean running in place, the blue might mean shaking all over, and the yellow could mean stretching. This will be the only movment allowed inside that hoop!
- Start the music. This is your child’s signal to begin moving freely around the space.
- When the music stops (i.e. when you press pause), your child must step into the nearest hoop.
- Children must perform the movement assigned to the hoop until the music starts again! Can they remember the movement associated with that color?
- When your child’s is ready for a challenge, add additional colored hoops and movements!
Play this game any time of day or evening, alone or as a group! Musical Magical Hoops also makes an excellent party game, and is especially fun to play outdoors during the warm summer months.
