Bird Mobile
A unique mobile needs lots of different objects, and what better way to make a beautiful art installation than with birds? Birds evolved from dinosaurs about 165 million years ago, and there are still over 10,000 different types today. Have your child list of as many birds he can think of, and let him choose the coolest ones for his mobile. He can keep adding until it turns into a huge flock!
What You Need:
- Wire hanger
- Colored construction paper
- String or yarn
- Googly eyes (optional)
- Markers
- Colored pencils
- Glue
- Scissors
- Pencil
- Pictures of birds in flight (optional)
What You Do:
- Have your child fold the construction paper in half and draw or trace small birds on the paper. To make a realistic mobile, the birds should have their wings outstretched in flight.
- Now your child can cut the birds out of the double layer of paper, so there are two identical birds each.
- Now your child can get creative! Decorate the birds on both sides with markers or colored pencils and glue googly eyes on each bird. Your child could also draw them on.
- Make more birds until you have at least six.
- Cut off some pieces of yarn or string of different lengths that will be used to hang the birds from the mobile.
- On each string, apply a little glue and sandwich the end of the string between the two sides of your birds to glue them down flat. Let dry.
- Tie the ends of the yarn or string onto the bottom of the wire hanger about an inch apart.
Help your child choose a good place to hang his mobile and admire his birds in flight.
