Klimt Collage

What You Need:

• Scrap construction paper
• 1 8"x10" sheet of silver paper
• 1 8"x10" sheet of gold paper
• Scissors
• Glue
• White drawing paper

What You Do:

1. Start by looking at artwork by Gustav Klimt by either visiting your local library or looking online with your child. One of Klimt’s most famous works is The Kiss, showcasing a couple kissing amidst a collection of shimmering shapes, which was part of Klimt’s classic Art Nouveau style.
2. Invite your child to gather bits and pieces of construction paper to reuse for this exciting art activity. Not only is it a fun project, but also a way to use up all those scraps!
3. Offer your child a pair of scissors and encourage him to cut as many squares as he can out of the construction paper as well as the sheets of gold and silver paper. Klimt’s artwork seemed to glow from his use of shimmering paints! He can cut small squares, around ½ inch in diameter and up to 2 inches square.
4. Once he’s got a good collection of squares, invite your child to begin gluing his colorful squares onto a sheet of white paper. He can position them in a linear, or straight, design and in either a pattern or random design.
5. After he’s created several rows of squares, invite your child to fill any gaps with additional squares until he satisfied with his shining Klimt inspired creation.
