How to Make a Celtic Knot
Celtic knots are super cool because they represent a never-ending line. They're especially popular come St. Patrick’s Day, although nothing will ever trump the shamrock as far as St. Paddy's symbols go. Get in a celebratory mood this March 17th by making a Celtic knot with your kid.
What You Need:
- 1 foot long piece of twine or rope
What You Do:
- Tell your child to set the piece of twine out flat in front of them in a single line.
- Encourage them to form a loop in the center of the twine, with the left side of the twine overlapping the right side.
- Then, ask them to flip the left side of the twine down and up through the loop, similar to the first step of tying their shoes.
- Next, using the same end of the twine used in the last step, help your child pass the end of the twine back through the center loop.
- Then, pass the twine up through the bottommost loop. There should be a loop of twine shaped like an upside down “U” sticking out of the top now.
- You should see three holes all in a row in your Celtic knot. Using the same end of twine from the last step, help your child weave the twine up through the bottommost hole.
- Then, let them weave the end of twine down through the middle hole.
- Next, help them weave the end of twine up through the uppermost hole (the top of the upside down “U” shape from step 4).
- Finally, help your child pull both ends of twine slightly to tighten the knot up a bit.
Tell your child not to worry if they don't succeed on the first try. Simply straighten out the piece of twine and try again.
