Cookie Jar
Stop! Don’t throw those empty oatmeal containers and old magazines into the recycling bin! They may look like trash, but with a few basic art supplies, a little imagination, and a dash of creativity, your child can repurpose those would-be throwaways into a one-of-a-kind Father's Day cookie jar. This project provides a hands-on lesson in the value of recycling household items and creating homemade gifts and gives your child the a chance to practice her basic literacy skills, creative design, and build her fine motor skills. The end result is a thoughtful and useful gift that's sure to show Dad how special he is long after that last cookie has been gobbled up. For an extra special surprise, try filling it with a batch of necktie cookies!
What You Need:
- Clean, empty oatmeal container with lid
- Construction paper
- Scissors
- Glue or tape
- Old magazines for cutting
- Photos of your child and her father together
- Contact paper
What You Do:
- Help your child measure and cut out a piece of construction paper to fit around the outside of the oatmeal container.
- Lay the construction paper over the contact paper and cut a same-sized piece of contact paper.
- Help her decide where to place the photos on the construction paper. Glue or tape them into place.
- Look through the magazine with her and help her choose words that describe her father. This is a good opportunity to practice letter recognition, spelling, and basic reading skills. Cut out the words and glue them to the construction paper.
- Help your child fit the construction paper around the oatmeal container and glue or tape it into place.
- Peel the backing off the contact paper while carefully pressing it over the decorated construction paper on the oatmeal container.
- Fill the container with homemade cookies, place a bow on top, and give it to Dad on Father's Day!
