Household Measurements

What You Need:

• Butcher paper
• Marker
• Ruler or tape measure
• Pencil
• Paper

What You Do:

1. Talk about different objects around the house and how they are similar and different from one another. Ask him to compare objects in terms of size. Is the refrigerator wider than the washing machine? Are the chairs shorter than the dresser?
2. Discuss the different ways of measuring things with your child. Width, height, and length are just a few of the measurement types you may want to introduce.
3. Ask your child why he thinks it may be important to measure things. Brainstorm different situations where taking measurement might be useful.
4. Have your child use a ruler or tape measure to measure different items around the house.
5. Help your child make a record of the household objects he has measured.
