Activity
Hissing Cat
Any decent Halloween celebration isn't complete without a cat. Even though this cat has an arched back to look as if it's hissing, it's still cute! This Halloween, your child can make their very own black cat. In the process, they will learn how to effectively cut ovals, arcs and circles, all from one paper plate. This activity is a great way for your kid to learn basic geometry vocabulary, all while making an adorable wall hanging.

Thank you for your input.
What You Need:
- Paper plate
- Black tempera paint
- Paintbrush
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Glue stick
- 2–3 white pipe cleaners
- Googly eyes
- Medium pom
- Medium-sized sequin
What You Do:
- Have your child paint the paper plate using black tempera. Allow it to dry completely. Ask them to identify the shape of the paper plate.
- Help your child place their hand on the plate with their fingers fanned out so their wrist is even with the edge of the plate. Next, have them draw an oval line around their hand and fingertips using a pencil. This will help to create the correct size for the cat's head.
- Make sure to have your child explain the difference between an oval and a circle. Then, have them cut out the oval shape. Any extra shavings they cut off to create the oval can be discarded.
- Encourage your child to create the cat's tail by drawing an arc on the plate, which should follow the contour of the oval they already cut out. Encourage your child to identify something they've seen in nature that resembles this shape (e.g. a rainbow).
- Help your child as they glue the cat's head and tail in place from behind the painted paper plate, so the surface of all the shapes that show is entirely black.
- Glue on the googly eyes.
- Have your child cut the kitty's whiskers and glue them in place.
- Encourage your child to glue on the pom to complete the cat's nose.
- Finally glue the sequin on to give the cat a mouth..
Display your fierce cat in an unexpected place and hopefully you'll give someone a good scare.
Hisssss...meeooow!
