Halloween Watercolor
Create your very own creepy, haunted castle sitting in a turbulent field of flowing grass, eerily surrounded by dark, ominous clouds. This is the perfect way to experiment with various techniques of applying watercolor to paper while learning how to mix colors to create scary effects.
What You Need:
- Watercolor paper 8.5” x 11”
- Watercolors
- Paintbrushes
- Small palette to mix colors
- Water cup
- Paper towels
- Small sea sponge
What You Do:
- Wet the sea sponge and wipe down your paper so it is completely covered with water and visibly damp.
- Mix burnt umber and dark blue watercolor paint on a palette, add water so the colors easily blend into a dark gray.
- Use a paintbrush to swirl the colors from the top of the painting down to where you would like the grass to begin.
- Blot the wet paint with a scrunched up paper towel to create cloud formations.
- Go back in with the dark color using a small brush and paint a few edges with the dark color to create contrast.
- While the clouds are still damp, use a tiny bit of orange or yellow on the tip of a small paintbrush to dab on some additional color into the clouds. Blot this out with a damp paper towel, leaving only a trace of color. Let dry.
- Mix two different green watercolors together and add water to help with flow. Brush the color in strokes from the bottom of the paper up towards the dark clouds, creating a texture that resembles grass. Let dry.
- Mix up more of the original gray color using burnt umber and ultramarine blue. Keep the paint dark and use very little water. Paint your entire castle using this color, keeping it a solid shape, as if it is a shadow. Let dry.
