Activity
Haunted Castle
Create a haunted house from upcycled materials in this creative Halloween activity! Children will use cartons and tubes to fashion a unique structure, then a decorate it with a face and other embellishments to add personality. Designed for fifth graders, this haunted castle craft is a fun way to experiment with form and introduce learners to the concept of anthropomorphism,
What You Need:
- Clean, empty and dry milk cartons (1, or 2)
- Cardboard tubes
- Tempera paint
- Paintbrushes
- Scissors
- Glue, or low-heat glue gun with parental supervision
What You Do:
- Arrange the cartons and cardboard tubes into the shape of a haunted castle. You may need to cut the tops of the cardboard tubes so they resemble turrets, or flanking towers.
- Paint a base coat over the entire house. Let dry.
- Paint the windows and a door on the castle to resemble a face. What kind of expression do you want your castle to have? How can you embellish the windows and doors to make them more expressive?
- Consider what your castle might be made of, like stones, planks, or bricks. Paint this motif as a pattern.
- Consider who or what might be lurking about the castle, like skeletons, cobwebs, monsters, or ghosts. Paint these around the structure, or position them in the doors and windows!
- Glue all the pieces together to complete your personified haunted castle.
