Grandparents Day Craft

What You Need:        

• White poster paper
• Pens, pencils, colored pencils, markers
• Ruler
• A grandparent to interview

What You Do:

1. Explain to your child that Grandparents Day became a holiday in 1978 and is celebrated on the first Sunday after Labor Day. 
2. On white poster paper, have your child use a ruler and pencil to draw a chart with three columns.  He can label the last two columns with headings of “Then” and “Now.” 
3. In the far left column, he can list some category names for each row, such as “Popular Movie,” “Popular Song,” “Popular Singer or Band,” “President,” “Winning Sports Team or Hero,” “Olympics Location,” “Popular Candy Bar,” or “Popular Toy.”  He may come up with some other good ideas for ways to compare his grandparents’ time period to his own; have him add his own ideas! 
4. When the chart is ready to be filled in, have him interview a grandparent to ask what a popular movie was when she was a child. What was a popular singer or band that she remembers?  Who was president when she was young?  (Continue with a question for each category listed.)
5. Your child can use a pen or pencil to fill in grandma’s answers under the “Then” column for each category row.  Then he can answer the same questions himself about his own current time period, and write those answers under the “Now” column.
6. He may want to illustrate his poster (using colored pencils or markers) by drawing a picture of himself and his grandparent on each side of the chart. He can hang the chart in his own house or give it as a gift to his grandparents. Happy Grandparents Day!
