Gargoyles for Kids
If your first grader is afraid of monsters, help him create his own adorable gargoyle protector! Famous statues of gargoyles protect churches and houses all over Europe, and now your kid can have one of his own, complete with squishy pink tongue and bouncy arms.
What You Need:
- Paper plate
- Tempera paint (gray, black and white)
- Scissors
- Pencil
- 4 strips of black construction paper (8.5" x 1.5" each)
- 1 whole sheet of black construction paper
- Stapler
- Pink foam
What You Do:
- Draw a gargoyle face on the front of the paper plate. Get as creative (or scary) as you like -- big eyes, pointy teeth, crooked nose, etc.
- Paint the face using tempera paint. Allow the paint to dry completely.
- Draw a tongue on the pink foam. Cut it out and glue it onto the gargoyle's mouth.
- Lay two strips of construction paper flat on a table, perpandicular to each other. Take turns folding the strips over one another in a Jacob's Ladder fold, continuing until you have folded the entire length of both strips. Staple both ends in place and extend the folded paper to create a long arm. Repeat this step for the second arm.
- Trace both of your hands on a sheet of black construction paper. Cut the handprints out of the paper.
- Staple each hand to the end of each arm. Staple the arms to the base of the plate.
- Hang your gargoyle up for protection!
