Food Painting with Wayne Thiebaud
Your child will be delighted to create a sweet painting in the style of Wayne Thiebaud! Tasty treats are one of the main subjects of Thiebaud’s colorful paintings. He also likes using bright colors and strong brush strokes. He'll learn more about still-life painting, and get to eat his subject when finished!
What You Need:
- Sweet treats
- White drawing paper
- Pencil
- Pastels
What You Do:
- Start by looking at examples of Thiebaud’s work online or by doing some research at your local library. Wayne Thiebaud is an American painter that liked using food as his main subject matter. And, Thiebaud is considered a pop artist, alongside other artists such as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein.
- Invite your child to head to the grocery store to select something fun and colorful to use for his Thiebaud inspired still life. Thiebaud often used repeated items in his paintings, so encourage your child to select several of the same item to use.
- Now your child can set up his tasty food items in an arrangement and get out a paper and pencil to create a light sketch.
- It’s time to get painting! Encourage your child to use strong brush strokes—and even put the paint directly on the paper without mixing! He can blend colors together as he goes!
- Once your child’s finished painting his Thiebaud inspired food artwork, it can be displayed somewhere for others to enjoy—maybe even in the kitchen! Then he can dig in on his sweet still life!
Fun Fact: Wayne Thiebaud may have produces lots and lots of food art, but his favorite food is cheese!
