Flower Silhouettes

What You Need:

• Pictures of flowers
• Glue stick
• Black construction paper
• Scissors
• White paper
• Picture frames

What You Do:

1. Before you begin working, find images of your child’s favorite flowers. If you don’t have handy images from a gardening catalog, do an image search. Many flowers, including iris, tulips and daffodils, are easy to find online.
2. Have your child glue the images onto the black construction paper. She doesn’t have to cut out the image first, she can do that at the same time that she cuts it out of the black paper.
3. As your child cuts around the image of each flower, discuss how she can tell the different flowers apart. What does a daffodil look like? What does a tulip or an iris look like? Ask questions so that her descriptions go beyond color.
4. When she has cut out the flowers, have her flip them over so that she is looking at the black silhouettes. How do these silhouettes resemble the photographs of the flowers? How are they different? Can she still tell which flower is which?
5. Have her glue them silhouette side up onto the white paper.

Framed images can be given as gifts to the gardeners in your child’s life. Silhouettes can also be glued onto blank greeting cards to create personalized thank you notes or get well cards.
