Activity
Make Flower Pot Music
Turn flower pots into a musical instrument with this inventive activity! This craft will give him a great opportunity to learn about music and sound. The fun doesn't end with the creating, when this lovely flower pot creation sways in the wind your kid will be able to hear the lovely sounds his hanging instrument makes. He'll practice choosing color palettes, applying patterns and assembling a sound sculpture. Music can definitely come from some unexpected places, and this flower pot windchime is a great way to teach your kid to listen to the music all around him.
What You Need:
- 3 Terra cotta pots (1.5" tall, 2 2/3" tall and 3.5" tall)
- Acrylic paint
- Paint brushes
- Jute twine
- Scissors
- Approximately 6 old fishing weights (or more if you'd like)
- Large wooden beads (large enough to string twine)
- Cotton swabs
- Toothpicks
What You Do:
- Help your child tie a large knot in the end of the twine and string it through the drainage hole of the smallest pot.
- Take the next smallest pot and string the twine through the drainage hole, tying a knot to secure the pot.
- Repeat this for the last pot, making sure they overlap to create a chime.
- Attach the fishing weights to either the pots themselves or the twine so that the weights will hit the inside of the pots when they gently sway in the breeze. You might have to do some experimenting here as it's going to be tricky figuring out how to get the fishing weights to hit the pots. If you used larger pots, you'll probably have to attach the weights to the underside of the pots as they won't sound when they sway in the breeze if they're attached to the twine.
- Finally, help him hang his pottery wind chime from a tree or pole outside and enjoy the beautiful sounds of the flower pot windchime!
