Main Idea
Thank you for your input.
What You Need:
- A newspaper or magazine
- Paper clips
- A refrigerator magnet
- String
- A stick or wooden spoon
- Scissors
- Paper grocery bag or medium-sized cardboard box
What You Do:
- Pick several newspaper or magazine articles and cut them so that the headline is separate from the article.
- Put a paperclip on each of the headlines. If the headline is long or large, you may want to put more than one paper clip on it. Put all the headlines in the paper grocery bag.
- Measure out an arm’s length of string. Tie one end of the string securely to the stick. Tie the other end of the string to the refrigerator magnet. This is the rod that your child will use to fish for headlines.
- Give your child all of the articles. Have him lay them out in front of him so that he can read them all easily.
- Using the rod you created, your child can fish for headlines in the grocery bag. After he catches a headline, give him until the count of ten to match the headline to the correct article. If he can’t match the headline in time, he has to throw the headline back into the bag. Keep on fishing until you match up all your headlines to their respective articles!
You may want to consider rewarding your child with a new book or magazine if he can successfully match up all of the headlines. It will be extra motivation to excel as a headline fisherman!
