Dragon Eggs

What You Need:

• Eggs
• 2 pots
• Stove
• Water
• Ice
• Tongs
• Food coloring
• Coffee cups
• Vinegar
• Plate
• Paper towels
• Spoons
• Timer

What You Do:

1. Have your child place 6 eggs in a pot of cold water. 
2. Put the pot on the stove and turn the burner on high.  When the water comes to a full boil, have your young chef set the timer for 13 minutes.
3. When the timer goes off, have your child create an ice water bath. All he needs to do is fill up the second pot with water and ice.
4. Carefully use the tongs to transfer the eggs from the hot water to the cold water.
5. While the eggs cool, mix the dye. In each coffee cup, have your child count out 20 drops of food coloring. 
6. Your child should add one tablespoon of vinegar and ½ a cup of room temperature water to the cup.
7. When the eggs are cool enough to handle, have your child tap each egg on a hard surface.  Tap and turn, tap and turn until he has gently cracked the entire shell. There should be little spider web cracks running everywhere.
8. Let him place each cracked egg in a cup of dye.  If the water does not cover the top of the egg, gently add a little more water.
9. Ask your child to line a rimmed plate with paper towels. 
10. When the eggs have been in the dye for 15 minutes, have your child check one to see if it is dark enough.  It may take up to 30 minutes to get a darker color.  When they are dark enough, your child can remove them from the dye and place them on the plate. 
11. The magical color of these eggs fades after they have been pealed.  Have your child call everyone to the table and help him peel the eggs, revealing the dragon pattern to his special guests.
