DIY Stilts

What You Need:

• Two large cans (24 oz can of peaches or tomato puree)
• A can opener (church key style/juice can opener)
• Heavy twine
• Scissors
• Washi tape or colored electrical or crafting tape

What You Do:

1. Before you get your child involved, wash out the cans and remove the labels.  The labels and glue don’t have to be completely removed if you are okay with a rustic look.
2. Turn the cans upside down on the counter. We'll call the sealed end of the can the “top.”
3. Use the can opener to punch two holes at the top of each can.  The holes should be made opposite each other, such as at 6 o’clock and 12 o’clock. 
4. Cut two pieces of twine, each approximately 40 inches long.
5. Feed one length of twine through the holes in one can. 
6. Tie the ends of the twine to form a loop. 
7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 with the second length of twine and the second can. 
8. Now its time for your preschooler to personalize his new stilts.  Using the colored tapes, he can add simple stripes, as in our example, or create more of a plaid pattern.  He can also cut the strips in shorter pieces to write his name. 
9. Take those extra inches outside and play!
