Decimals Game
Every fourth and fifth grader needs to be familiar with decimals! Here's a fun way to compare the value of different decimal amounts. You'll work together to evaluate number statements you make using playing cards and a printed game board. Think about how much a tenth is worth versus how much a hundredth is worth. Watch your child's understanding soar as you practice this important concept.
What You Need:
- Deck of playing cards with the face cards (jacks, queens, and kings) removed
- Paper
- Pencil
What You Do:
- Make 3 inequality indicators for each player, each one should have one of these symbols: <, >, and =.
- Players will take turns dealing their deck of cards and selecting from their inequalities.
- First, one player will select one from their 3 inequality options and set it down.
- Then, the dealer will lay out two cards from their deck, face up and making sure to place the cards down in the order they are dealt, from left to right with the inequality in between.
- Tell the player to imagine there is a decimal in front of the number values of the cards.
- Players should then determine whether or not the statement made by the cards is true. Remind them to not let themselves be tricked! For example, .10 (a ten) is smaller than .3 or .4!
- If a player's inequality using the greater than or less than sign (<, >) is correct, they earn 3 points. If it's incorrect, they must subtract a point.
- If a player's inequality using the equal sign (=) is correct, they earn 15 points. If it's incorrect, they don't gain or lose any points.
- On the next turn, the dealer should lay two cards down on each side of the inequality to practice with tenths. The turn after that should feature 3 cards on each side to practice hundredths.
- When no more cards remain, add up your scores to see who's won!
