Cornhole Game
If your kids are looking for a fun game to play on a slow afternoon, why not give cornhole a try? Cornhole is a simple tossing game traditionally played with cotton bags filled with feed corn, or cornhole bags. Players try to toss their bags through a hole in a wooden board. With two cereal boxes and several crushed aluminum cans, you and your kids can easily craft your own miniature cornhole game that can be played inside or out. Best of all, you won't have to spend a cent—everything you need is right in your recycling bin!
What You Need:
- 2 empty cereal boxes
- Scissors
- 6 empty aluminum cans, washed and dried
- Paper
- Markers or other decorating materials
- Tape
What You Do:
- Help your child draw a circle a few inches wider than the aluminum can on the center front of each cereal box.
- Cut out the circles with scissors to create a hole in each cereal box.
- Decorate the cereal boxes in an earth-friendly theme such as recycling arrows or animals.
- On the back side of each box, cut out a stand for the box such as what you would see on the back of a picture frame. To do this, draw a large rectangle on the back of the box against the bottom edge. Cut along one vertical side of the rectangle and along the top and bottom sides.
- Fold the rectangle over along the other vertical side. Now you have a stand!
- Position the cereal boxes facing each other, propped up by their stands, about 10 paces apart.
- Help your child carefully crush the aluminum cans into compact, ball-like shapes by standing on them. Crush the sides in slightly with your hands first to make it easier.
- Carefully run your hands over the crushed cans to make sure there are no sharp edges on any of them. Cover any sharp spots with tape.
- Now it's time to play! Divide players into two teams and have one player from each team stand beside a box.
- Have the players take turns tossing the crushed cans through the hole in the box across from them. Each player gets to throw three cans. For each round, the player who lands the most cans in the hole wins 1 point for his team.
- After the first round, rotate the players and start another round. The first team to score 8 points wins!
