Gourmet S'mores
Everyone knows the three basic S’mores ingredients: chocolate squares, graham crackers, and marshmallows. But why stop there? In this activity, kids get to engage their creativity as they come up with their own Gourmet S'mores recipe, and they even get some writing practice along the way! To give your child some ideas, we've also included our delicious PB and S'mores recipe below.

Subjects:
Thank you for your input.
What You Need:
- Graham crackers
- Chocolate squares
- Mini marshmallows
- Peanut butter
- Microwave
- Pencil and paper
What You Do:
- Before you start coming up with your own recipe, try our PB and S'mores recipe to give your child some ideas. Lay out 2 graham cracker squares, and have your child spread peanut butter on one cracker.
- Next, have him add chocolate squares on top of the peanut butter.
- Have him count out 5 mini marshmallows and place them on top of the chocolate squares, then lay the other graham cracker on top.
- Place the crackers on a microwavable dish, and put the creation in the microwave. Heat it for about 10 seconds, or longer if needed to make the marshmallows and chocolate melt.
- Now, give the creation a try. How does he like it? Discuss with your child some other possible S’mores variations he might create. For example, could he use some kind of cookies (like oatmeal, shortbread, chocolate chip, or peanut butter cookies) instead of graham crackers? Is there a flavor of chocolate (raspberry, orange, dark, or other) he might want to try in place of plain chocolate squares? Is there an addition (like jam) to the basic three ingredients that he can think of?
- After he thinks of a new S’mores idea, have him write out the recipe for his Gourmet S’mores. This fun writing activity gives him practice writing out steps in a clear and understandable way.
- When he's all done writing his recipe, give the recipe a try! As you work through the recipe, allow him to decide if his directions are clear and easy to understand. If not, encourage him to do a little final editing.
When the recipe is finished and edited, try doing a taste test. Make regular S'mores, PB and S'mores and his new recipe, and see which one the family likes best!
