Activity
Alphabet Pancakes
A, B, C, D, E, F, G! Help your child practice budding literacy skills by making alphabet pancakes! Miniature pancakes cooked in the shape of letters and numbers will engage your child in the process of cooking breakfast, as well as give them plenty of opportunities to practice their letter recognition and spelling skills. This is a fun way to fill up your child's tummy and spend time together creating edible lessons in the kitchen.
What You Need:
- Pancake batter
- Butter or oil
- Spatula
- Squeeze bottle
What You Do:
- Remove the lid from the squeeze bottle and carefully pour the pancake batter inside. Replace the lid.
- Place a skillet on the stove over medium heat and add a small amount of butter or oil to coat the bottom.
- While the skillet is heating up, ask your child which letters they want to make. If they need prompting, suggest that you create their name, initials, or favorite letter to begin.
- When the skillet is hot, hold the squeeze bottle over the skillet and carefully pour the batter into the shape of the letters you want to create. Invite your child to watch—a safe distance from the hot stove—as the pancakes cook.
- When the pancakes are cooked on one side, use the spatula to flip them over and cook the other side.
- When the pancakes are cooked, serve with syrup, jam, peanut butter, fresh fruit, or whatever toppings your child enjoys.
- Encourage your child to be creative with their breakfast…for example, take a bite out of an “o” pancake to create a “c” or nibble the bottom of an “H” to form the number 4.
