Activity
Color Scavenger Hunt
Your preschooler is familiar with the colors in their crayon box, but can they find these colors in the world? Take them on a scavenger hunt to find out! Do this activity when flowers are in bloom or be prepared to visit a pumpkin patch to make orange easier to find! A great way to get your family outdoors while honing a young nature lover’s powers of observation.
What You Need:
- White paper
- Crayons
What You Do:
- Before you go for your daily walk or go out into the yard to play, take a sheet of paper. At the top of the page, color a red square. Beneath this, orange. Beneath this, yellow. Continue, coloring squares green, blue, and violet. If more than one child will be doing the scavenger hunt, make multiple sheets.
- Call everyone together and explain that when they are out today, they will be on a scavenger hunt. In a scavenger hunt, you find the things on the list.
- Hand each child a sheet. Ask them to go over the colors with you. Explain that they will be finding things outside that are these colors.
- Guide your young hunters as they look, helping them to find the more difficult colors. As they find each color, check it off. If one child is doing much better, encourage this child to help the others. Discuss what kinds of things they might look for so that they have the opportunity to observe the various colors in the world around them.
Make the game more challenging as you go. You can only count natural items. On the next walk, you can count only man-made items. Or, if you are walking down a lengthy road, assign each child one side of the street.
