Counting Flap Book

What You Need:

  • Construction paper, variety of colors
  • Hole punch
  • Markers
  • Card Stock, 5 sheets, 4" x 6"
  • Glue stick
  • Two or three-ring binder

What You Do:

  1. Have your child fold five sheets of construction paper in half.
  2. Help her hole punch them so they fit into the three-ring binder.
  3. Let her place them into the binder to create the base of her math book.
  4. Open the book to the first piece of construction paper.
  5. On the left side, have her draw the number "1."
  6. On the right side of the book, encourage her to draw a picture that represents "1" thing. It can be anything from a bee to a train.
  7. Continue doing this with each sheet of construction paper, until she finishes with number "5."
  8. Make a fold in the card stock sheets about 1/2 an inch from the top to create a hinge for each sheet.
  9. Starting at the first page of the book, help her to glue the hinge piece (1/2") just above the number so when the flap is folded down it hides the number.
  10. Repeat this for all five pages.
  11. While the glue dries, close the book and have her decorate the cover.
  12. With all of the flaps covering the numbers, ask your child to flip through the pages and count the objects she's drawn.
