Activity
Make a Christmas Addition Tree
Make a festive tree that also encourages your child to practice her recall of addition facts. This holiday project makes learning fun through the magic of art! The Tree is a great way to keep math facts fresh in her mind during the holiday break or help a struggling student to improve during her time off. She'll get actively involved with learning math through making art first, with her personally decorated Christmas Addition Tree.
What You Need:
- Cardboard (try reusing an old cereal or packing box)
- Green construction paper
- Scissors
- Clear drying, non-toxic glue
- Markers or crayons
- Sequins
- Glitter
What You Do:
- Cut the cardboard into a large triangle, Christmas tree, shape.
- Place the cardboard shape on top of the green construction paper and trace. Cut the green triangle out.
- Decide how many addition problems to include. Cut a flap into the construction paper for each problem.
- Fold the flaps up and glue the remaining paper to the cardboard Christmas tree shape.
- Use a bright or dark marker to write addition problems (without the answer) onto the top of the flap. Pick each flap up, and write the answer on the underlying cardboard.
- Decorate the tree with glitter, sequins and glue!
Create other holiday trees for different math facts. Try a subtraction, multiplication, or division tree!
