Activity
Chef Hat
Transform a pillowcase into a chef's hat using cardboard, staples and scissors. This is a great recycling activity, and it create a great opportunity for kids to learn about healthy cooking. Have your child create his hat, then cook a meal like a pro!
What You Need:
- Recycled Pillowcase
- Scissors
- Stapler
- Staples
- Cardboard, 16" x 24"
- Paper tape
What You Do:
- Help wrap the cardboard around your child's head to create the cylindrical base of the hat. It should stand vertical (16"), and wrap horizontally (24") around his head. The hat should fit snug without being too tight. Tape it in place.
- Cut off any excess cardboard that was wrapped around.
- Staple the cardboard in place to reinforce the base of the chef hat.
- Have your child cut along the seam of one side of the pillowcase.
- Have him wrap the pillowcase around the cardboard cylinder. You'll notice the fabric is floppy on top. Pull down the pillowcase to the length desired to make the top of the chef's hat floppy, but not so much that it falls over.
- Overlap the fabric where it's cut to make sure it fits snuggly to the cardboard.
- With the fabric that hangs below the bottom of the cylinder, have your child fold it up 3" at a time until the base of the fabric matches up with the base of the cylinder.
- Staple the folded fabric in place at the bottom of the cylinder.
- With the top fabric, have him staple it once in the front middle of the cylinder.
- Then, make folds every 1" and staple the fabric in place, while tightening the top fabric to the top of the cardboard. It will remain floppy on top.
- Now it's time for your child to proudly wear his chef hat while he makes a delicious meal!
