Caterpillar Pencil Holder

What You Need:

• Empty and cleaned can
• Tempera paint in yellow, green and black
• Paintbrush
• Pipe cleaners in green and black
• Green tissue paper
• Hot glue
• Masking tape
• Googly eyes
• Scissors
• 2 green pompoms

What You Do:

1. Have your child paint blades of grass on the tin can for a cool place to keep his pencils.
2. Crumple up tissue paper to create eight walnut-sized balls, and cover each one with masking tape for a sturdy ball.
3. Your child can use glue to attach the balls to each other, so they form the body of the caterpillar. He can keep working until the caterpillar is about two inches longer than the can.
4. Cut 5” pieces of green pipe cleaner for the legs, and glue them across each section of the caterpillar’s body. Your child can bend the legs to create a realistic joint and foot for each leg.
5. Glue two short pieces of pipe cleaner to the head of the caterpillar for its antennae.
6. Glue a green pompom to the tip of each antennae.
7. Glue the caterpillar to the side of the can by attaching its legs with hot glue.
8. On the top sections of the caterpillar’s body that extends beyond the cap, paint the underside yellow.
9. Now lay the can on its side and glue a pipe cleaner down the back of the caterpillar for the spine. Allow it to dry completely.
10. Attach two googly eyes to the top of its head.
