Activity

Black Friday

What You Need:

  • White paper
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Black marker
  • Pencil
  • Hole punch
  • Ribbon
  • Calculator (optional)

What You Do:

  1. Have your child use a ruler and a pencil to draw rectangles on a sheet of paper for the price tags.
  2. Ask them to cut out the price tags and use the hole punch to punch a hole on one side of each tag.
  3. Help your child thread ribbons through the holes to create a tag that can be easily attached to items arranged around the house.
  4. Encourage them to write prices on the price tags. The prices should be whole numbers without change and can go up to $10.00.
  5. Send your shopper around the house and have them place the tags on a variety of items they like.
  6. Ask them to go shopping for a given number of items.
  7. After they've gathered their loot, have them add up the amounts on the price tags to figure out the total.
  8. Now, have your child set out again. However, this time you should give them an exact budget and ask them to try to find items that add up to that amount.
  9. Finally, give them another budget and ask them to find items that add up to just under that amount so they have money to spare.
  10. For a more complex addition game, add some cents to the dollar amounts.
