Activity
Black Bat Treat Keeper
This Halloween, have your child create a ghoulish bat treat keeper. It's a simple, self-standing Halloween candy holder made from a recycled paper tube and construction paper. While constructing the treat-keeper your kid will learn a little about the basic components of sculpture. By combining objects of cut paper and a cylinder, he'll create a memorable party favor. This fun project is a perfect activity if you're working with a whole group of kids!
What You Need:
- Recycled paper roll
- ½ sheet construction paper, orange
- Ruler
- Pencil
- Tempera paint
- Brushes
- Googly eyes
- Glue or tape
- Scissors
- Tissue paper, or netting
- Candies, small toys, or coins
What You Do:
- Have your child paint the paper roll with black tempera paint and set it aside to dry.
- Lay the construction paper on the table in a landscape orientation. Encourage him to fold the construction paper in half and draw half of a bat wing, connecting the inner wing to the fold in the paper.
- Ask him to cut the wing out and unfold both wings.
- Using a ruler, have him measure as many striped lines as he would like across the span of the wings. Paint the stripes black.
- When the stripes on the wings are dry, making sure they are centered, attach them from the back of the painted paper roll with tape or glue to create wings.
- From the front of the roll, have him paint a mouth and fangs for the bat using tempera paint, and attach googly eyes.
- Insert tissue paper or netting to create a holder inside the bat's body.
- Fill the bat with your favorite candies, small toys or coins.
