Activity
Black and White Pumpkin
Create a dramatic, elegant line drawing of a pumpkin in this white-on-black Halloween art project. Young artists will use a pumpkin model to create a still life using white crayons on black paper in this creative drawing activity. Designed for fifth graders, this appealing monochromatic drawing technique can be applied to other Halloween themes as well.
What You Need:
- Black paper
- White crayon
- Pumpkin
What You Do:
- Have your child set the pumpkin in front of their workspace, so that they have a clear view of it.
- Have your child begin by using the white crayon to sketch the outline of the pumpkin on the black paper. Make sure they draw the lines lightly.
- Once the outline is done, it's time for the details. Have your child study the pumpkin carefully for small details, like bumps and ridges, that they can show in their drawing.
- Remind your child to add in some shading and shadows. Let them darken their earlier lines, adding depth and character to the pumpkin sketch.
- Have your child compare their pumpkin drawing to their actual pumpkin. Is there anything that is missing?
- Black and white drawings make beautiful decorations. Encourage your child to experiment with the art form by drawing other Halloween themes, like ghosts and cats.
- Create a Halloween gallery of your child's best black and white drawings and display them in your home.
