Flower Basket Craft
Celebrate May Day and the beauty of spring with a charming basket of handmade paper blooms! Little hands get a good workout pinching and twisting tissue paper squares to create the pretty flowers, helping to build dexterity and fine motor skills. Plus, this basket of flowers makes an adorable gift to brighten any room.
What You Need:
- Tissue paper, various colors cut into 3-inch squares
- Scissors
- Paper plate
- 1-inch wide ribbon, any color, cut to 15 inches long
- Glue
- Disposable bowl
What You Do:
- Help your child to cut 1-inch slits on opposite sides of the paper plate, about 1 inch from the edge.
- Show her how to weave one side of the ribbon through one of the slits and repeat on the other side. Pull the ribbons taut so the lengths are even when matched up over the front of the plate.
- Pour a small amount of glue into the bowl.
- Encourage her to choose a tissue paper square, pinch it in the center, and twist it into a flower.
- Ask her to dip her paper flower in the glue and press it on her paper plate basket.
- Have her continue twisting and gluing flowers into her basket until the basket is covered and full of beautiful blooms.
- After the basket is filled, help her to tie the ribbon into a bow.
- On May Day, surprise someone special with a basket of blooms!
Did You Know? Traditionally, May Day is a time to celebrate the bounty of spring and the end of harsh winter weather. In many countries around the world, however, May Day is also the International Workers' Day (similar to our Labor Day). On this day, workers gather in the streets to hold demonstrations and street rallies.
