Activity
Baseball Pennant
Show off your team spirit by creating a festive baseball pennant for your favorite team. With bright colors and vintage flair, this pennant is a fun way to cheer on the local team. And with all the cutting, coloring, and designing involved, it's sure to bring out the artist in your little sports fan, too.
This activity calls for the pennant to be made out of construction paper, but for a sturdier, more traditional pennant, try using felt instead.
What You Need:
- Construction paper or felt
- Markers
- Scissors
- Ruler
- Clear drying, non-toxic glue
- Sequins
What You Do:
- Start with a quick geometry review. What's a triangle? How many sides does it have? Show your child a real baseball pennant (or if you don't have one, a picture). What type of triangle is it, and what kinds of angles does it contain?
- Encourage your child to choose a baseball team. It can be his favorite major league team, his own little league team, or an imaginary one. Brainstorm the team's colors and mascot together.
- Now make the pennant. Ask him to use the ruler to draw a large triangle on the construction paper or felt using markers, then cut it out.
- Have him write the team's name on the pennant with a marker.
- Have your child draw the team's mascot or other symbol on the pennant beside the name. For a team named the Tigers, for example, he might draw a growling tiger.
- Add extra glitz by gluing sequins onto the pennant over the team's name or around the perimeter.
Let him proudly display his new pennant on his wall or bring it to a ball game to cheer on his favorite team.
