Banana Sandwich
Here’s an easy twist on a peanut butter and banana sandwich. Our version features the banana as the bread and makes for a fun after-school snack. Any time you need to use up a bunch of bananas before they are too ripe, get your young chef busy in the kitchen. He’ll have fun and he won’t even realize he’s learning valuable skills at the same time.
What You Need:
- Cutting board
- Table knife
- Two small bowls
- Spoons
- Plate
- Two bananas
- Vanilla Greek yogurt
- Peanut butter
- Chocolate and hazelnut spread
What You Do:
- Help your young chef measure two tablespoons of vanilla Greek yogurt into each bowl. Regular yogurt will word fine too, but Greek yogurt is especially good as it's packed with protein.
- Now, encourage him to add one tablespoon of peanut butter to one bowl of yogurt. Mix well, showing him how to scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl.
- Have your child add one tablespoon of chocolate and hazelnut spread to the second bowl of yogurt. Be sure to let him do the mixing this time. While he's mixing, remind him to scrape the bowl to make a smooth blend.
- Show your child how to use the cutting board and table knife to slice each banana. The slices should be between 1/8 inch and 1/4 inch thick, but they're a little bigger or a little smaller it's no big deal. If they are too thick, it will only mean that you’ll need to get out another banana.
- Now it is time to assemble the sandwiches. Lay out one quarter of the banana slices on a plate.
- Use a clean spoon or a clean table knife to top these banana slices with the peanut butter filling. As your child works, have him place a second banana slice on top of the peanut butter filling to make a fruity finger sandwich. Sampling is encouraged.
- Repeat steps 5 and 6, but this time use the chocolate and hazelnut filling. Happy snacking!
Try freezing these banana sandwiches for a special treat on a hot summer day. You can also add a dash of cinnamon to the chocolate and hazelnut filling, or even try out some almond or cookie butter.
