Homemade Tortilla Chips
Don't toss out those old tortillas! Your child can use them to create her own tortilla chips in any flavor she can imagine. And, she’ll hone her culinary skills along the way.
What You Need:
- 4 old tortillas
- 1 tbsp vegetable oil
- Salt, pepper
- Sheet pan
- Knife
- Spatula
What You Do:
- Start by helping your third grader preheat the oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit. Now she can get out a sheet pan and measure and add the vegetable oil to the pan.
- Have your child stack the tortillas together and use a knife to create several triangles out of the circles. Not only is she honing her cutting skills, she’s learning more about shapes and math concepts.
- Now she can position the cut triangles of tortilla onto the oil coated sheet pan along with turning the triangles so they have oil on both sides, which will help them toast up nicely.
- Invite your child to place the tortilla chips in the hot oven and let bake for a couple of minutes and then remove using oven mitts, and flip the triangles using a spatula. Once the tortilla chips are toasted on both sides, she can remove them from the oven.
Now your child can sprinkle the warm tortilla chips with salt and pepper and enjoy with her favorite salsa! Or, for a special treat, your child can experiment with different flavors by sprinkling with cinnamon and sugar, or one of her other favorite seasonings.
