Make a Set of Binoculars
Sometimes the best crafts are ones made from materials found right in your own home. These simple and easy to make binoculars, made from two toilet paper rolls, glue, and some string, are a big hit with the kids. They can go crazy making up their own games using these binoculars as the centerpiece.
Have them go on a treasure hunt for things that start with the letter “B” or have them see how many birds they can find in the trees. Once they make these binoculars, there's no end to what they can discover on their own!
What You Need:
- 2 toilet paper rolls
- Construction paper
- Glue
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Black Construction paper (or black tape)
- String
- Hole punch
What You Do:
- Have your child place the toilet paper roll on the preferred color of construction paper. The color she chooses will be the color of the binoculars, so make sure she chooses wisely.
- Using a pencil, have her measure the length of the toilet paper roll. Then cut a piece of the construction paper long enough to wrap around the roll once. Repeat this with the other roll.
- Glue the construction paper around the rolls and let dry.
- Cut out a piece of black construction paper that is about a half inch wide and long enough to wrap around the very bottom of each roll. Then glue the black paper to the edge of the roll without going over it. It should look like a strip of black around the circle opening. (If you have black tape, like that used for tennis racket grips or hockey sticks, use the tape around the very bottom of each roll. This is to simulate the black plastic at the base of real binoculars.)
- When all the paper coverings are dry, glue the two tubes together and let dry.
- Use your hole punch to make holes at the sides of each roll and tie a piece of black string long enough to go over your child's head to each end. And she's ready to roll with her very own, handmade binoculars!
