Activity
I Am Thankful For...
There's so much to be thankful for during the holidays, from family and friends to yummy food and fun outings with loved ones. But does your child know what they're most thankful for? Creating this turkey decoration with your child is a great way to talk about all the reasons you both have to be grateful.
Grades:
Subjects:
Thank you for your input.
What You Need:
- Construction paper, multi-colored
- Mini stapler
- Scissors
- Glue
- Googly eye
- Circular glass
- Pencil
- Marker
What You Do:
- Help your child cut four strips of paper to create the feathers for their turkey. The paper should be cut to about 1.5" x 8.5".
- Ask your child to trace the bottom of the glass using a pencil onto a sheet of brown paper, and again on a sheet of white paper. Have them cut out both circles.
- Help them draw a turkey head shape, which should look like a lightbulb.
- Then, your child can draw and cut out the beak for their bird.
- Have them glue the turkey head in the center of the brown circle.
- Glue on the googly eye and beak of the bird.
- Help your child loop the paper strips and attach them to the top half of the brown circle using the stapler.
- Ask them to glue the brown circle to the center of a sheet of construction paper.
- Now they should glue the white circle on top of the brown circle, which will help to hide the staples.
- Finally, ask your child to think about what they're the most thankful for this holiday season. Then support them to write what they came up with in the middle of the white circle (for younger children you might have them trace the word and/or copy the letters from another paper).
