Create a Family Graph!

What You Need:

• Paper
• Clipboard
• Pen
• Posterboard
• Markers
• Optional: stickers

What You Do:

1. Brainstorm with your child about the questions she will ask. Some ideas: favorite food, favorite color, favorite hobby, where they were born, how many siblings they have, their eye color, languages they speak, and how old they are.
2. Help your child type or handwrite the questions on a piece of paper. Be sure to leave enough space under each question to record the responses.
3. Print out or make several copies of the questionnaire for each person your child plans to interview.
4. At the next family event, attach the sheets of paper to a clipboard and invite your child to make the rounds! Interview each family member personally, and record their answers on the sheets.
5. After each family member has been interviewed, add up the results that match. Find out how many family members have similar interests!
6. Come up with a title, such as "My Family Graph" and write it at the top of the poster.
7. List each category on the board. For example, favorite color, eye color, and age will each be a category on the poster. Be sure to leave a good amount of space underneath every section.
8. Under each category, list the subcategories (i.e. the answers people gave). For example, under the "favorite color" category, the subcategories could be red, blue, and green depending on what answers each family member gave. Be sure that each answer appears only once--even if three people said their favorite color was red, only list red once.
9. Count up all the answers, and write the number under the appropriate subcategory. You can also use stickers, stick figures, or list each person's name to represent the numbers. It should look like this:

10. Display the posterboard so family member's can see how much they have in common...and who's the odd man out!
