Make an Acrostic Birthday Poem
Kids wait 365 days for their birthday to come around, and then it’s over in a flash! This year, have your third grader make the memories last by creating a special family birthday keepsake.
Third graders are developing writers. They’ve mastered the basic conventions of writing simple sentences, and are ready to explore fresh, less structured forms of writing. Poetry can provide your third grader with such freedom – it can be punctuated or unpunctuated, rhymed or unrhymed. It’s all about experimenting with form and fun!
Here’s a writing activity to get your third grader to combine the fun of poetry with the excitement of celebrating a birthday. Bring on the cake, and make a birthday keepsake!

Thank you for your input.
What You Need:

Sunny weather Tried to score a goal, but Uncle Bob blocked it! 9 candles on the cake 2 blows to get all the candles out 0 drops of rain 0 pieces of cake left 9 more days until my brother's birthday!
- Have him decorate the page with scraps of wrapping paper, photos, stickers, or decorative drawings to help commemorate the occasion.
- Put the finished page in a plastic sleeve, and put in a binder.
- Throughout the year, create a page for each family member and add it to the binder.
